LACNIC Board Calls on the Community to Promote IPv6 Deployment

The RIPE-NCC recently announced<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ripe.net%2Fpublications%2Fnews%2Fabout-ripe-ncc-and-ripe%2Fthe-ripe-ncc-has-run-out-of-ipv4-addresses&data=02%7C01%7Cedmundo.cazarez%40nic.mx%7C455fc5398982420d8d7808d774381347%7Cc65a3ea60f7c400b89345a6dc1705645%7C0%7C0%7C637105656508754699&sdata=YaALV7KU7nVgoZXdB2kVFyLAYSBHQCzcrSKrWBzLsGY%3D&reserved=0> that their pool of available IPv4 addresses has been exhausted and called for greater progress on IPv6. This had already occurred in the APNIC and ARIN<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.arin.net%2Fvault%2Fannouncements%2F2015%2F20150924.html&data=02%7C01%7Cedmundo.cazarez%40nic.mx%7C455fc5398982420d8d7808d774381347%7Cc65a3ea60f7c400b89345a6dc1705645%7C0%7C0%7C637105656508754699&sdata=JeApx1Tow6SP3rsqTM9AO2V8ZP3bstZ7q%2B9ZHk3CJA0%3D&reserved=0> regions a few years ago. LACNIC has been informing<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lacnic.net%2F1039%2F2%2Flacnic%2Fipv4-depletion-phases&data=02%7C01%7Cedmundo.cazarez%40nic.mx%7C455fc5398982420d8d7808d774381347%7Cc65a3ea60f7c400b89345a6dc1705645%7C0%7C0%7C637105656508764695&sdata=Avrz2SPcV9J5oA4tuPgMueiFc%2FjnVP13C4mjjzrJesg%3D&reserved=0> that, in our region, IPv4 address space will be exhausted by mid-2020.

LACNIC has been implementing in-person training activities since 2005 and we have been offering online courses on IPv6<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcampus.lacnic.net%2F%3Flang%3Den&data=02%7C01%7Cedmundo.cazarez%40nic.mx%7C455fc5398982420d8d7808d774381347%7Cc65a3ea60f7c400b89345a6dc1705645%7C0%7C0%7C637105656508764695&sdata=%2BYiq82T8flxS%2Bbf2OJSeBcK%2BJ3xXza2oOsfuRESswOQ%3D&reserved=0> since 2015. These initiatives have allowed us to train more than 23,700 professionals.

Compared to the others, our region has the highest percentage of members that have already received IPv6 address space. To date, in addition to IPv4 addresses, more than 95% of our members have already received an IPv6 assignment<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nro.net%2Fabout%2Frirs%2Fstatistics%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cedmundo.cazarez%40nic.mx%7C455fc5398982420d8d7808d774381347%7Cc65a3ea60f7c400b89345a6dc1705645%7C0%7C0%7C637105656508774688&sdata=N5gzRKepL%2Fc8IWxtXUt5%2B%2BrqF587m6tn%2BfFUMg66X9o%3D&reserved=0>. Likewise, we also have the highest percentage of IPv6 enabled networks<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fv6asns.ripe.net%2Fv%2F6%3Fs%3D_RIR_LACNIC&data=02%7C01%7Cedmundo.cazarez%40nic.mx%7C455fc5398982420d8d7808d774381347%7Cc65a3ea60f7c400b89345a6dc1705645%7C0%7C0%7C637105656508774688&sdata=0iPxHKPbcD4%2Foi3yqd6o4aBH0C4Nw%2BwPgZMwHspqVhk%3D&reserved=0>, with approximately 45% of the region's 9,000 autonomous systems announcing IPv6.

Despite all of this, the effective deployment of networks with IPv6 traffic in our region is still approximately 20%,<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstats.labs.lacnic.net%2FIPv6%2Fgraph-access.html&data=02%7C01%7Cedmundo.cazarez%40nic.mx%7C455fc5398982420d8d7808d774381347%7Cc65a3ea60f7c400b89345a6dc1705645%7C0%7C0%7C637105656508784681&sdata=Vuze%2B6bhzOf2%2B7AdFmErwvzZ9Gve0TU1e26wfAo1SjE%3D&reserved=0> a figure lower than global deployment<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fintl%2Fen%2Fipv6%2Fstatistics.html&data=02%7C01%7Cedmundo.cazarez%40nic.mx%7C455fc5398982420d8d7808d774381347%7Cc65a3ea60f7c400b89345a6dc1705645%7C0%7C0%7C637105656508784681&sdata=Inep9qoWWhIM%2FYmN17DWeilqK5dsdXjRwxVANgsd6VU%3D&reserved=0> levels, which are at almost 30%.
